A wiki needs editors, and recruitment is everyone's responsibility.

Please send new recruits to the [[ATW:Editor applications|editor application]] page.

== Word of mouth recruitment ==
The best way to get editors on board who are vetted and trustworthy antifascists is to recruit people you know and trust personally.

Exercise caution! Focus your word-of-mouth recruitment on people you can trust. Avoid discussing ATW in public places, where you might be overheard, or anywhere that keeps a permanent record of your conversation, such as email or social media. If you are openly an activist or participate in direct action, and you may be under surveillance, be especially cautious.

Be careful when sharing [[ATW:Pseudonyms|your ATW pseudonym]] with anyone. Editor applications can include personal references, but it's not required if you are not comfortable sharing your pseudonym.

== Covert recruitment ==
Covertly spreading the word about ATW is as easy as writing it on your classroom whiteboard before anyone gets there for the day, tagging "antifascistwiki.org" at your favorite queer bar bathroom stall, or secretly leaving ATW recruitment flyers in a public place. Be creative! The ATW bureaucrats do due diligence on all applicants, so a personal relationship of trust is not required (it helps, though!).

== Covert recruitment ==

== Covert recruitment ==

'''Violence''' is the use of physical force to by people or institutions to cause harm to other living beings, including pain, injury, maiming (inducing a disability), death, or other physical damage. Understood more broadly in a political and philosophical context, the definition of violence is often understood to include the ''threat'' of violence, overtly or covertly, as well as coercion, the use of the threat of violence to subject a person or people to one's will. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines violence as "the intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community, which either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment, or deprivation"; it recognizes the need to include violence not resulting in injury or death.<ref name=":0">{{cite book|last1=Krug |first1=Etienne G.|last2=Dahlberg|first2=Linda L.|last3=Mercy|first3=James A.|last4=Zwi|first4=Anthony B.|last5=Lozano|first5=Rafael|date=3 October 2002|publication-date=2002|title=World report on violence and health|url=https://www.who.int/publications/i/item/9241545615|hdl=10665/42495|location=Geneva|publisher=World Health Organization|page=360|isbn=92-4-154561-5|hdl-access=free}}</ref>

== Types of violence ==
The WHO has three categories to describe violence: ''self-inflicted, collective'', and ''interpersonal''. Self-inflicted violence includes matters of self-harm and suicide, which is sometimes performed as a form of protest. Collective violence occurs between two ''groups'' of people, such as communities and states, and is generally associated with political, social, or economic motivations. War is the most extreme example of collective violence. Interpersonal violence occurs at the scale of one person to another.<ref name=":0" />

=== Collective violence ===
In addition to war, there are many forms of collective violence. One form is structural violence: in which institutions or the structure of society harms people by preventing them from exercising their basic rights or meeting their basic needs. Another sort of collective violence is "slow violence": the violence, for example, of pollution, which exposes its victims to harm over long periods of time. Many forms of violence can be inter-related, for example the [[Global South]]'s experience of [[climate change]] is best understood through the lens of slow violence and structural violence (and in many other respects besides).<ref>{{Cite book |last=Nixon |first=Rob |title=Slow Violence and the Environmentalism of the Poor |publisher=Harvard University Press |year=2011 |isbn=978-0-674-06119-4 |location=Cambridge, Massachusetts}}</ref>

== State violence ==
One of the key defining characteristics of a state is that it is said to possess the "monopoly on violence". Quoting German sociologist Max Weber:<blockquote>A compulsory political organization with continuous operations will be called a 'state' [if and] insofar as its administrative staff successfully upholds a claim to the ''monopoly'' of the ''legitimate'' use of physical force in the enforcement of its order.<ref>{{Cite book |last=Weber |first=Max |title=Economy and Society |publisher=Berkeley: University of California Press |year=1978 |pages=54}}</ref></blockquote>The monopoloy on violence is the means by which a state maintains its privileges, such as taxation, and the means by which it enforces the social order, i.e. laws. These conditions are only possible through some form of coercion, to legitimize and enforce obedience with the rules defined by the state under the threat of violent retaliation, such as detainment, imprisonment, or even execution ([[capital punishment]]).

=== Police violence ===
Organized [[police]] forces are an example of the state employing its monopoly on violence. Police officers are empowered by the state to use violence to enact the policies of the state. Police are inherently violent - that is the purpose of their role in society, and the violence is ''legitimized'' by the state. However, [[police brutality]] often exists on a scale which exceeds the legitimized extent of violence the state affords to the police. The extent to which ''illegitimate'' police violence is permitted (or overlooked) by the state allows for forms of systemic or structural violence to exist. The consequences of this can be unintentional, but may also allow the police to enact "unofficial" policies of the state, such as the repression of [[Race|racialized]] people, without being directly accountable.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Amnesty International |first= |date=2007 |title=Amnesty International Report 2007 |url=http://thereport.amnesty.org/eng/Homepage |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20070807192225/http://thereport.amnesty.org/eng/Homepage |archive-date=7 August 2007}}</ref>
Really like this page, its the most comprehensive single source for information on DHH I've found. I dont think I have anything substantive to add to this well-cited page, but I have noticed that DHH at least used to circulate in near-leftist spaces. The only solid evidence I can recall was that he used to donate to [https://citationsneeded.libsyn.com/ Citations Needed] and they would read his name during the credits. Probably not notable enough to track but I do think he used to be less far-right than he's been for the last few years.

P.s. How does his vanilla Wikipedia page not have "Controversy" section!?
'''David Heinemeier Hansson''', also known as DHH, is a Danish programmer, entrepreneur, race car driver, and multi-millionaire. He is the creator of the popular Ruby on Rails web framework, the Chief Technology Officer of 37signals, the company responsible for productivity software such as Basecamp, HEY, and ONCE, and a member of the [[Shopify]] board of directors since November 2024.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Hansson |first=David |title=David Heinemeier Hansson (DHH) |url=https://dhh.dk/ |access-date=6 April 2026 |website=David Heinemeier Hansson (DHH)}}</ref> David has published a number of [[White Supremacy|white supremacist]] and [[Opposition to Immigration|anti-immigration]] articles, publicly supports [[Islamophobia|anti-Islam]] agitator Tommy Robinson and the violent [[wikipedia:2025_British_anti-immigration_protests|British anti-immigration protests of 2025]], and has worked to dismantle progressive politics within the companies and communities he is responsible for.

== "As I remember London" ==
In September 2025, David published an article titled "As I Remember London" on his personal blog which uses numerous fascist and racist [[Dog Whistles|dog-whistles]] to argue against immigration in Great Britain.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Hansson |first=David |date=15 September 2025 |title=As I remember London |url=https://world.hey.com/dhh/as-i-remember-london-e7d38e64 |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20260401205851/https://world.hey.com/dhh/as-i-remember-london-e7d38e64 |archive-date=1 April 2026 |access-date=6 April 2026 |website=David Heinemeier Hansson}}</ref> This article generated controversy particularly within the Ruby on Rails community, leading to several calls for his removal from positions of leadership.<ref name=":3">{{Cite web |last=Wynne |first=Victor |date=25 September 2025 |title=Ruby deserves better leadership than DHH |url=https://victorwynne.com/dhh/ |access-date=6 April 2025 |website=Victor Wynne}}</ref><ref name=":0">{{Cite web |last=Süleyman |first=Tekin |date=21 September 2025 |title=The Ruby community has a DHH problem |url=https://tekin.co.uk/2025/09/the-ruby-community-has-a-dhh-problem |access-date=6 April 2026 |website=The website of Tekin Süleyman}}</ref><ref name=":1">{{Cite web |last=Celis |first=David |date=19 September 2025 |title=Rails Needs New Governance |url=https://davidcel.is/articles/rails-needs-new-governance |access-date=6 April 2026 |website=David Celis}}</ref> As of April 2026, David remains the chair of The Rails Foundation board of directors and 37signals remains a "core member" of the foundation.<ref>{{Cite web |title=The Rails Foundation |url=https://rubyonrails.org/foundation |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20251114042654/https://rubyonrails.org/foundation |archive-date=14 November 2025 |access-date=6 April 2026 |website=The Rails Foundation}}</ref>
David's article relies on allusions to indirectly support racist views. For example, the second paragraph reads:<blockquote>London is no longer the city I was infatuated with in the late '90s and early 2000s. Chiefly because it's [[wikipedia:Ethnic_groups_in_London|no longer full of native Brits]]. In 2000, more than sixty percent of the city were native Brits. By 2024, that had dropped to about a third. A statistic as evident as day when you walk the streets of London now.</blockquote>The paragraph cites the Wikipedia article "[[wikipedia:Ethnic_groups_in_London|Ethnic groups in London]]", which explains that 59% of London residents were born in the UK, but only 36% are white.<ref>{{Cite web |title=Ethnic groups in London |url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnic_groups_in_London |access-date=6 April 2026 |website=Wikipedia}}</ref> David's article can be shown to exclude the non-white people who make up the difference between these figures. The article uses classic [[fascist]] argumentation tactics, relying on an emotional appeal to the discomfort of white readers with racist perceptions of the everyday makeup of people one may encounter in London. The article evokes nostalgia for a past where non-white people were less visible, and plays up British [[Nationalism|nationalist]] myth-making by relating symbols such as [[wikipedia:Big_Ben|Big Ben]] and [[wikipedia:London_Underground|The Tube]] to British (white) identity. David addresses "native Britons" in heroic, galvanizing terms, and calls for [[Ethnocracy|organizing states along ethnic lines]]:<blockquote>You can rest assured that I'd be in the streets waving a Danish flag if these were my conditions in my native country. I think that's a pretty universal sentiment. There's absolutely nothing racist or xenophobic in saying that Denmark is primarily a country for the Danes, Britain primarily a united kingdom for the Brits, and Japan primarily a set of islands for the Japanese.</blockquote>David's arguments rely primarily on emotions and manipulating facts to stoke those emotions, for example disingenuously citing immigration as the cause of changing demographics in London, though a majority of London residents were born in the UK. The article's coverage of the "[[wikipedia:Grooming_gangs_scandal|Grooming gangs scandal]]" appeals to racist fears over the rape of innocent white women by racialized and de-humanized caricatures of the out-group:<blockquote>I really feel for the Brits because it's not obvious how they get themselves out of this pickle. They're still reeling from the Pakistani rape gangs that were left free to terrorize cities like Rotherham and Rochdale for years on end with horror-movie-like scenes of the most despicable, depraved abuse of British girls.

I don't know. But I'm glad that there clearly are many Brits who are determined to find out. Unwilling to just let their society wither away while their bobbies chase bad tweets instead of the rampant street thefts or those barbaric rape gangs. Unwilling to resign the rest of the country to the kind of demographic replacement that befell London over the last two decades.</blockquote>"Demographic replacement" is a dog-whistle alluding to the debunked white supremacist [[Great Replacement Theory]].

=== Defense of right-wing figures ===
"As I remember London" defends several right-wing agitators over the course of its narrative, including:

* [[wikipedia:Tommy_Robinson|Tommy Robinson]], a prominent far-right British activist, [[Islamophobia|Islamophobe]], and leader of the violent far-right protests that inspired Hansson's article. Robinson has been criminally convicted of harassment, assault, and fraud, and has served five prison terms for his criminal convictions.
* [[wikipedia:Graham_Linehan#Arrest_for_posts_on_X|Graham Linehan]], a British comedian and [[Transphobia|anti-transgender]] activist who was arrested and questioned on suspicion of incitement to violence regarding his transphobic posts on X.
* Prime Minster [[wikipedia:Mette_Frederiksen|Mette Frederiksen]] of Denmark, a left-conservative politician whose anti-immigration rhetoric is quoted in Hansson's article.

=== Response from the Ruby on Rails community ===
Numerous members of the Ruby on Rails community stepped forward to respond to this article, and to Hansson's rhetoric generally, calling for Hansson's removal from positions of authority within the Ruby and Ruby on Rails communities.<ref name=":3" /><ref name=":0" /><ref name=":1" />

{{Quote box
|author = David Celis
|source = Rails Needs New Governance
|quote = “As I remember London” should be a wake-up call for everyone in the Ruby and Rails communities. This is not a man who wants to keep going. This is a man who romanticizes a past that was predominantly good for white men. This is a man who has spent years railing against diversity, equity and inclusion and who spreads anti-trans rhetoric. This is a man who is deeply afraid of immigration changing countries’ cultures and “national identities”, despite this kind of change being a constant for the whole of human history. This is a man who is a white nationalist. And he is in sole control of Rails, this framework we all love.
}}Many members of the community took the opportunity to reject Hansson's broader political views, looking beyond the inciting article itself:<ref name=":0" />
{{Quote box|quote=Unfortunately it isn’t just migrants and non-white people that have come under fire in DHH’s recent writing and social media posts. There have been multiple examples of anti-trans rhetoric. There was the post where he described an ad featuring a plus-sized Black women as “grotesque” and celebrated the ads being replaced with ones featuring “blond babies” (what is it about the baby’s blondness that is relevant I wonder?). There have been the posts veering into puritanical Pronatalism, another favourite subject of the nationalist right. Whether it’s his direct intention or not, there has been a consistent theme of othering and stigmatising in his recent writing. The message is clear: if you are trans, a migrant, black, overweight, childless, have ADHD, then in DHH’s view you are somehow inferior. Instead of raising up and supporting the marginalised and vulnerable, DHH choses to exclude and punch down. This is not something the Ruby community can continue to simply ignore.|author=Tekin Süleyman|source=The Ruby community has a DHH problem}}

== Basecamp's "Best Names Ever" ==
Basecamp is a productivity tool developed by 37signals. In 2021, Basecamp disbanded their [[Diversity, equity, and inclusion|DEI]] committee and banned "societal and political" conversations in the workplace, changes jointly announced by Hansson and Basecamp CEO Jason Fried.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Hansson |first=David Heinemeier |date=26 April 2021 |title=Basecamp's new etiquette regarding societal politics at work |url=https://world.hey.com/dhh/basecamp-s-new-etiquette-regarding-societal-politics-at-work-b44bef69 |access-date=6 April 2026}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |last=Fried |first=Jason |date=26 April 2021 |title=Changes at Basecamp |url=https://world.hey.com/jason/changes-at-basecamp-7f32afc5 |access-date=6 April 2026}}</ref> The changes appear to have been motivated by internal controversies within Basecamp. The Verge reports that a list of "Best Names Ever" was maintained by customer service representatives as an in-joke to nickname their customers, which is reported to have included numerous inappropriate or racist nicknames for Asian and African customers. The discussion of what to do about this list is said to have led to the change in policy.<blockquote>Interviews with a half-dozen Basecamp employees over the past day paint a portrait of a company where workers sought to advance Basecamp’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion by having sensitive discussions about the company’s own failures. After months of fraught conversations, Fried and his co-founder, David Heinemeier Hansson moved to shut those conversations down.<ref name=":2">{{Cite web |last=Newton |first=Casey |date=28 April 2021 |title=Behind the controversy at Basecamp |url=https://www.theverge.com/2021/4/27/22406673/basecamp-political-speech-policy-controversy |access-date=6 April 2026 |website=The Verge}}</ref></blockquote>At the time, Hansson acknowledged that the list of names was wrong, but objected to employees who framed the list as a step in the "[https://www.holocaustcenterseattle.org/pyramid-of-hate pyramid of hate]", a tool used by the Anti-Defamation League to understand how hate develops in society, and stopped discussions which aimed for broader reforms to address the underlying issues at Basecamp.<ref name=":2" />

== "As I remember London" ==

=== Defense of right-wing figures ===

{{Quote box|quote=Unfortunately it isn’t just migrants and non-white people that have come under fire in DHH’s recent writing and social media posts. There have been multiple examples of anti-trans rhetoric. There was the post where he described an ad featuring a plus-sized Black women as “grotesque” and celebrated the ads being replaced with ones featuring “blond babies” (what is it about the baby’s blondness that is relevant I wonder?). There have been the posts veering into puritanical Pronatalism, another favourite subject of the nationalist right. Whether it’s his direct intention or not, there has been a consistent theme of othering and stigmatising in his recent writing. The message is clear: if you are trans, a migrant, black, overweight, childless, have ADHD, then in DHH’s view you are somehow inferior. Instead of raising up and supporting the marginalised and vulnerable, DHH choses to exclude and punch down. This is not something the Ruby community can continue to simply ignore.|author=Tekin Süleyman|source=The Ruby community has a DHH problem}}
== Basecamp's "Best Names Ever" ==
{{Underused external link template|https://explorer.natureserve.org}}

This template wraps {{tl|Cite web}} and formats a citation to a webpage at [[NatureServe]] Explorer similar to that in the [https://explorer.natureserve.org/AboutTheData/UseGuidelinesCitations NatureServe Explorer Data Use Terms and Citations]. [[Help:Citation Style 1|Citation Style 1 (CS1)]] is used unless {{para|mode|cs2}}.

==Parameters==
This template will accept all parameters that are available to {{tl|Cite web}}, though only a few are needed because it will automatically provide a standardized set of parameters. Parameters '''url''', '''last1''', '''author1-link''', '''website''', '''location''', and '''language''' are set within the template to pre-formatted values. The template will overwrite any values placed in these parameters.

Parameters '''id''' and '''title''' are required. Using the value of '''id''', the template formats '''url''' so that it points to a NatureServe Explorer webpage.

Parameters '''date''' and '''access-date''' are strongly recommended. The value to use for '''date''' can be found at the bottom right of NatureServe Explorer's webpage for the taxon. NatureServe updates the data periodically.

===Setting id===
Parameter '''id''' must be set to the NatureServe Explorer identifier for the page being cited. This can be found in the URL. The NatureServe Explorer identifier is the numeric value after the text "ELEMENT_GLOBAL." within the URL. In the example URL shown, it is "'''2.130353'''".

:: <nowiki>https://explorer.natureserve.org/Taxon/ELEMENT_GLOBAL.2.130353/Carex_rupestris</nowiki>

Correct:
: {{tick}} Correct{{nbsp|2}}: {{para|id|2.130353}}

Using a leading period (".") or including "ELEMENT_GLOBAL" will not work:
: {{cross}} Incorrect: {{para|id|.2.130353}}
: {{cross}} Incorrect: {{para|id|ELEMENT_GLOBAL.2.130353}}

===Setting title===
Parameter '''title''' should be set to the title of the webpage, usually the {{em|scientific name}} of the taxon. The template does not determine the formatting. Italics for species and infraspecies must be used when setting '''title'''.

Correct:
: {{tick}} Species: {{para|title|{{code|''Rhynchopsitta pachyrhyncha''}}}}
: {{tick}} Animal subspecies: {{para|title|{{code|''Monadenia fidelis baxteriana''}}}}
Incorrect:
: {{cross}} Common name: {{para|title|{{code|Rock Sedge}}}}

===Setting date and access-date===
The value to use for '''date''' can be found at the bottom right of NatureServe Explorer's webpage for the taxon. NatureServe updates the data periodically.

Parameter '''access-date''' is the date you accessed the webpage.

===Pre-formatted parameters===
Parameters '''url''', '''last1''', '''author1-link''', '''website''', '''location''', and '''language''' are set within the template to pre-formatted values. Parameter '''publisher''' is not set as it is deemed redundant. {{em|Do not use}} pre-formatted parameters because the template will overwrite anything placed in them with the following values.
